What are vaccinations?

Vaccinations train your body’s immune system to identify and attack harmful invaders like bacteria, fungi, or viruses. 

When a vaccine enters your body, it teaches your immune system to create antibodies –– proteins that defend your cells from harmful pathogens. These antibodies find and eliminate these microscopic invaders, reducing your risk of serious complications, like hospitalization or death.

How do vaccinations work?

Vaccinations work by exposing your immune system to a safe version of a particular pathogen. This can occur in the form of:

• A protein or sugar that comes from the pathogen
• A dead or inactivated pathogen
• A weakened pathogen
• A toxin made by the pathogen

Most vaccinations are administered via injection, but some come in nasal spray form and are inhaled. 

Are vaccinations safe?

Vaccinations are safe and usually well-tolerated. Before they are approved, vaccinations undergo testing by regulatory bodies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
